There are many things that I can spend hours on hand doing; one of which is reading. And not just reading about who shot John and took his money (although novels and other fictitious story lines are good), but I absolutely love to read books on entrepreneurship, leadership, or biographies on successful people—how they view life, how they live life, what was their purpose in life. I love analyzing what they have in common, how they “made it” and what obstacles they had overcome in order to attain it.

After speaking with successful people and reading countless books on wealth, I learned they all had many common themes. But there was one that stood out the most to me–how they started. Most did not have some grand idea or elaborate patented mechanism that they launched to start their business. They just had a hobby and their hobby turned into a side job, and the side job turned into a business.
What is it that you love doing? What do people come to get your advice for? Is that something people would pay you for? I am guessing the answer to that question is a “YES”. We live in the 21st century and our generation will pay to have someone to do just about anything.
Are you a teacher who loves helping new teachers learn the tricks and the trades of the classroom? Why not create a teacher training class to sell online for up and coming teachers to purchase?
Do you love cleaning and are always getting compliments on how neat you keep your house? Why not start cleaning houses on the weekend to generate extra money?
Do you love gardening and have the best garden in your neighborhood? Are people constantly asking you for tips on how to grow certain herbs? Why not create an online course to show people how to create the perfect herb garden?
God has gifted all of us with various skills and gifts to use to benefit others. He has also given us a creative mind to think outside of the box to put those talents to good use. Instead of complaining about how much money we do not have, let’s begin planning and researching how to generate the money we want to have.
So if you have already begun using your gifts/skills to generate income, to help motivate you and get your wheels turning, here are three quick (and cheap) things you can do today to get noticed:
- Get a website. People need to know where you are, who you are, and what you offer and the best place to find out about anything nowadays is by googling it. Your website is your internet address. In order for people to find you, you must be located on the internet. I purchased my website(s) via Bluehost and absolutely love it. You can not only purchase your website from them (i.e. www.yourname.com), but they can also act as a host as well (and install Wordpress for free). - Start blogging. Nearly every successful business or influential leader not only has a website, but a method of communicating daily, weekly or monthly to its “followers”—they have a blog. The best way to get out information to their audience is to give it out for free, regularly. Start writing and sharing what you know; whether it is teaching, cleaning or sharing gardening tips, there are people waiting to hear what you have to say.
- Get on Social Media. One of the fastest ways to draw people to your business (and you website) is through social media. You do not have a business page on Twitter, and Facebook, and Pinterest, and Instagram. Just choose the one you are most comfortable with that relates to your target audience. For example, if you are a gardener, Pinterest may be a great start because you can put great pictures of your garden which could draw more people to you website, hence your business. Choose one and create a page for your business and tackle it.
If you have a hobby (as most of us do), determine a way to use it as a means to increase your income. Instead of sitting and wishing your employer will give you a pay raise this year, why not take control of your finances and create a way for you to generated extra income…starting with your hobby.
